my fixie (by dennis)

I submitted my bike to fixedgeargallery — where I was bike #4,999 — soooo close to the 5,000th bike, who won a t-shirt.. (dangit!!). Anyway, this weekend the New York Times published an article all about the fixie phenomenon that is apparently all over Brooklyn right now…

Beep! Beep! It’s the hipster highway!

For real though… I *love* riding the fixie around the city. It’s been my regular ride around town for a few years now, and honestly, nothing beats the feeling of zipping around traffic with your feet solidly connected to the wheels. Some say, it’s transcendental.

And c’mon.. fixies are so so pretty.

[Thanks fellow fixie-rider Phil]

fun with your brain

  1. WITHOUT anyone watching you they will think you are GOOFY and while sitting where you are at your desk in front of your computer, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.
  2. Now, while doing this, draw the number “6″ in the air with your right hand. Your foot will change direction.

[Thanks James]

we got webby’d

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

Woohoo.

Techdirt got nominated for a Webby Award this year in the “Blog - Business” category. This is the second nomination that I’ve had something to do with — the first one was back in 2001 for mySimon (we didn’t win)… The awards gala is on June 5th, in NYC, which is timed perfectly since I’ll be in NYC that week already.. Time to dust off the tux.

Yay, awards.

Oh yah… I almost forgot, there’s a “people’s voice” award too — so go there (and vote for Techdirt cuz we’re the best).

45:33

So, I’ve been loving my Nike+ iPod nerdy shoe integration thing that Andy and Mer got me for Christmas… I’m currently about halfway into a 100 mile race with Carlo… Carlo’s currently winning — he’s at 51.89 miles, but I’m right there with 45.92 miles…

Anyway, I just noticed today that Nike is giving away the LCD Soundsystem song that they commissioned from them.. awesome.. Here’s the link:

45:33, by LCD Soundsystem.

This song used to be only available on iTunes for $9.99 for the “album,” which consisted of one 45:33 track. Hmmm. That doesn’t seem very fair. I mean, it’s one track, right? So it should cost $0.99.. not $9.99… whatever. It’s free now.

Weird, the song is actually 45:55 long.

Anyway — I’m listening to it now, and it sounds like it’s gonna be a great track to run to. Carlo, I’ll be catching you soon. Look out.

really getting tired of chinese telemarketers

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

For the past few weeks, like clockwork, this happens around 5:37pm…

Setting: My House

(The phone rings)

Chinese Speaking Telemarketer: nee how mah? (Translation: How are you?)
Me: Who is this?
CST: nee hway jiang guo yi mah? (Translation: Do you speak Chinese?)
Me: I do, but I would rather not speak Chinese to telemarketers.
CST: (Something unintelligible.)

*click*

Woo, Fun. I actually spoke with them the first time, and they were selling me long distance service to China or something. And then it was really fun explaining to them (in Chinese) that I didn’t want their long distance service. So yah, now that they’re calling like almost every day (hooray), I’ve found that speaking English seems to be the best way to deal with them.

Yay, phone spam!

weekend shenanigans… happy april!

wow, i'm so hipster (by dennis)

This past weekend was action packed.. It was Dana’s birthday on Friday, and since it coincided with the monthly critical mass ride, a bunch of us got together and joined up. I hopped on my fixie (cuz I’m so hipster) and joined up, and Dave gave us all mustaches, just because. This was my second critical mass, and this ride was pretty fun as well.. Around 500 bicyclists took over the city streets as we wound our way through downtown, the mission (beep! beep! it’s the hipster highway!), and eventually all the way down to the 280. Fun fun fun.

Saturday my baseball team, the SuperStars, opened the season with a 3-0 victory over the Tsunami.. Brandon pitched a spectacular complete game, earning him the shut-out. I went 0-2 at bat, with a K(looking) and a 1-3 groundout. Hmm. Time to hit the batting cages. Anyway, it’s awesome to start the season with a win — hope we can keep that going.. Yay baseball..

catch, james (by dennis)

Then, Sunday morning, Andy, Jason, Jeff and I headed up to Sears Point for some karting action.. It was novice day, so there were tons of little kids driving around. Like little 8 year olds and stuff. Honestly, they fit into their karts a lot better than we did. Then again, I’m big and fat, so that doesn’t help.

Sunday afternoon, Stephanie organized an oystering picnic up at Tomales Bay. It was a gorgeously sunny day, albeit a tad windy, but I love shucking and eating oysters on the bay.

So yah… April has blasted onto the scene with a flurry of activity. I honestly can’t believe that we’re in April already though… Time flies…
