things to do in nyc

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

So, I’m headed to NYC for my semi-annual east coast trip… It’ll be awesome to see my NY friends again, and I’m also going to my 10 year college reunion next weekend up in Ithaca. Wow. 10 years. I’m OLD. But yah.. we’re gonna stay in the dorms and stuff and frolic around campus and stuff. Maybe Jablow will keep his shirt on this time.

But yah, I’m going to be taking a few days off of work to run around NYC doing NYC things, so here’s a partial list that I’ve come up with… If anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know. I like fun. For some odd reason, my last two trips to NYC included going out to Brighton Beach (including once to pick up a nightstand with Korby), which is pretty far out there, so maybe I won’t do that again. Then again, if anyone needs help moving furniture from some remote stop on the MTA, you know I’m always up for it.

Oh yah.. I’ll also be telecommuting a few days from NYC — anyone have good suggestions for good cafes where I can work? I’ll be in the Columbus Circle area…

escaping from alcatraz… t minus 4 days…

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

I’ve got 4 days left until my big race. Yikes.. I hope I’ve done enough training. According to my records, I’ve swam 23.18 miles, biked 271.04 miles, and ran 113.52 miles… which probably isn’t anywhere near enough… but, I guess there’s nothing I can really do about it now.. eep.

I’m excited and nervous about the whole thing — in particular the 1.5 mile swim from Alcatraz to the city… Hopefully it will be calm and glassy. The weather forecast for Sunday is partly cloudy with a high of 61… Anyway, Sunday morning, I’ll be boarding the ferry to Alcatraz at 4:15am, and at 7am, I’ll be joining 1,600 racers as we all jump into the bay..

So, here’s a cool thing — if you want to track my progress during Sunday’s race, Accenture (the main sponsor) has set up a site where you can get alerts (either via email or text or voice call..) whenever I finish the swim, bike, and run.. Neat. I’m aiming for 1:00 swim, 1:00 bike, 1:30 run.. but we’ll see… I’m gonna be super happy just to finish..

yay, i bought a painting.

the haves (by dennis)

A few weeks ago, I had a super full day, where I had a baseball game at 11am, and then shuck & groove at 2pm… And, on top of that, it was also Mission Open Studios… Argh! I hate when so many things fall all on one day. Dan and Robin’s friend Mike was showing his stuff that day, and I wanted to go check it out, since I’ve always liked his paintings.. Anyway.. open studios started at 10am, so I met Dan at Mike’s studio at precisely 10am.. perused all of Mike’s work, and then bought this painting. Efficient I am.

This is the second piece in my slowly growing collection of paintings.. The first being ID Index 3 by my friend Ben…

me on tv in 1993…

Monday, May 21st, 2007

Woohoo. Tales from my nerdy past. This is my 1993 appearance on the local quiz show, Academic Challenge. I tried to upload this to YouTube, but they have a 10 minute limit, and the other day I decided to try google video, and it worked there..

I remember our strategy for the “Hodgepodge” category was to always pick “Math” because our rationale was that no matter what, we would be able to figure out the answer. But, honestly, that was actually the most stressful cuz I don’t really like math that much, and I’m a little too impatient to sit there and calculate things out… I’m much more of a “don’t think about it too much” trivia answerer..

Anyway… good stuff. Wow. the 90s.. Yay.

it’s a lovely day..

This weekend was absolutely gorgeous here in sf.. With temperatures reaching into the 80s, it was like the second time in the 10 years I’ve lived here that I actually got to bust out the shorts..

So, today, Andy, Meredith and I went over to Alameda to check out the monthly flea market. Didn’t find anything great, since browsing was cut short due to a massive infestation of gnats that seemed to plague the market (maybe it should have been called a gnat market)..

We then grabbed Bailey and headed for the dog beach at Fort Funston.

And then, Andy made a video of the lovely day. Yay.
