Happy Bike Month! (And don’t forget.. tomorrow is bike to work day…)

I was pointed to this by fellow ohioan Ali, who recently gave me a shout-out for pointing her towards campfire goods, a couple of t-shirt guys in akron, with a ton of midwest-themed clothing — I have their midwesterner tshirt.

I’m a sucker for any bicycle-themed or ohio-themed piece of clothing.

Man, if someone were to come out with some sort of “I Bicycle in Ohio” t-shirt, I think I might instantaneously combust with excitement.

Man, I gotta get out and ride already.

This reminds me… a few years back, there was this trailer I saw at the Opera Plaza Cinemas for some bicycle movie… I think it was set in New York as well (so it’s not MASH or Macaframa), and the trailer ended with a shot of a cyclist slamming an opening taxi door shut to avoid getting doored..

In other bikey movie news, macaframa is premiering on September 24th in Vegas — tickets are FREE, so if you’re there, get on that, yo.

Dana organized another bike trip down to the pigeon point lighthouse last weekend and it was awesome… This year, I biked down the first day and the sagged it back the 2nd… I think I could have ridden back, but yah, I guess I felt a little lazy. And besides, I’m doing boot camp like four days a week now, so I don’t feel like a total schlep. The ride was awesome. Friday rained enough to cancel my regularly scheduled baseball game on Saturday (which I was quietly happy about, since I couldn’t go), so I was a little worried about the weather for the weekend. But, the weather was absolutely gorgeous the whole weekend.

We met in the morning at the panhandle to start the ride, and headed through the park to ocean beach. The waves were awesome… like huge and breaking magnificently our entire ride down the coast. The route took us through Daly City, past devil’s slide to Half Moon Bay.. From there, we continued down the 1, stopping in San Gregorio for a beer, and then up and over stage road to Pescadero for lunch. We rolled into the hostel in the afternoon, and settled in for a relaxing evening. It was awesome.. The ride wasn’t too bad, about 60 miles, with “rolling hills” as Davin liked to call them. Yah.. California is awesome sometimes.

I submitted my bike to fixedgeargallery — where I was bike #4,999 — soooo close to the 5,000th bike, who won a t-shirt.. (dangit!!). Anyway, this weekend the New York Times published an article all about the fixie phenomenon that is apparently all over Brooklyn right now…

Beep! Beep! It’s the hipster highway!

For real though… I *love* riding the fixie around the city. It’s been my regular ride around town for a few years now, and honestly, nothing beats the feeling of zipping around traffic with your feet solidly connected to the wheels. Some say, it’s transcendental.

And c’mon.. fixies are so so pretty.

Andy took a great pic of my fixie on our ride over to Sausalito yesterday. He bought that digital camera for $10 at Walgreens.

Some farking icehole has stolen my front bike wheel off my fixie. From inside my garage. It’s purposely not a fancy bike so that people don’t try and steal stuff off of it. I had one of those “anti-theft” skewers on there (not the quick-release ones). FECK, I’m pissed.

I mean, seriously, that’s really, really annoying… I was nearly late for lunch, so I run upstairs to grab the front wheel off my other bike, and then I realize that it’s at the shop for a tune-up. Double Feck. And of course, I can’t ride my mountain bike either. So yah, I drive downtown instead, incur like $18 in parking expenses, and am like half an hour late to lunch. ARGH.

Coincidentally, the Guardian has a story this week about my friend Max’s recovery of his stolen bike. Apparently, bike theft is a thriving industry here in San Francisco. There’s TONS of bikes around, and lots of rich people that buy super expensive bikes. And, the police doesn’t seem to care about bike thefts when there are like shootings going on (uh.. yah, that shooting was at Grove & Laguna, like 3 blocks from my house, hooray. (Aside: interesting that when you talk about a shooting, my hood is “Western Addition,” but when you talk about shopping, it’s “Hayes Valley”)

So yah.. what’s up with the recent rise in crime in the City? That’s not cool, yo. Car 54, Where are You?
