minimizing sleep…

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

So, I’ve been working from home for a little over a year now, and while I do appreciate the commute, the best part of this gig is that the schedule is ultra-flexible. I only have one scheduled meeting a week, and the rest of the work week basically just happens whenever. I mean, there’s more than enough work to do, and yes, I typically do need to be working during the middle of the day, and I have deadlines and stuff, but for the most part, it’s nice to have the flexibility to, say, go for a bike ride in the afternoon or something.. That is, of course, I get my work done, which is cool, cuz then I can chill when I’m typically brain dead (like right after lunch) and work when I’m most alert (late at night, like now, for example).

The most interesting thing that this work flexibility has affected is my sleep schedule. The only time I really have to set my alarm clock is on the weekends, but otherwise I just wake up whenever my body says “wake up”.. And, if I get too tired and lose focus during the day, then it’s cool to just veg or take a little nap for a bit. But, when I add all of the hours of sleep up I typically get during a 24 hour period, it works out to about 5 or 6 hours, and I’ve actually been feeling a lot more alert than I recall feeling when I had to set an alarm before..

So, my typical schedule is something like:

8am - wake up, eat some breakfast and start work…
10am - mind starts to wander, go downstairs and play some MLB 06
noon - go forage for food and chill or (not lately, admittedly) work out or something
2pm - back at work, ok, maybe lie on the couch and rest my eyes for a few minutes
6pm - take bailey to the park and run her around a bit, then have dinner and go out and do something social or play softball or something (or, if I don’t go out, I might fall asleep on the couch for a little bit after dinner)
midnight - back at work, this is when I get my best coding done
3am - force myself to go to sleep, cuz if I don’t, I’ll just keep going

So yah, it’s a little bit of a weird schedule, but it’s been working out for me quite well I think. I get plenty of work time in, and I still am able to fit in work out time (ok, not lately, I’m getting fat) and social time.

Anyway, I’ve never really heard of it before, but there’s this thing called Polyphasic sleep that sounds really interesting… Instead of this kind of ad hoc sleep schedule I’ve been subscribing to, the Polyphasic plan puts you on a specific, regimented sleep schedule of 20 minute naps spaced every 4 hours throughout the day. You end up getting about 2-3 hours of sleep daily.. Sweeeet. Imagine if you had 22 hours of waking time a day… That’d be awesome. AND supposedly you get to eat 4 meals a day on this whole thing (or you lose weight, which could be another benefit)..

Supposedly the main drawback are that it’s actually hard to stick to the schedule and if you go off it, then you get really really tired. (hey, it’s nice hanging out and all, but I gotta go take my 20 minute nap) And, some people actually report that they get bored with all of the extra free time (great, I’m up at 4am, but nobody else is..)

Anyway, There seems to be lots of people trying it though, so hmm.. I’m intrigued.. Maybe I’ll give it a try…

I mean, it’s gotta be better than just popping Provigil, right?

friday funny.

Thursday, July 20th, 2006

It’s friday.. and Dana im’d me a funny link to a Dane Cook clip.

So, I looked around YouTube for some more comedy, and found a few clips of one of my favorite comedians, Demetri Martin..

Here’s one of them

Woo.. good stuff… Anyway, I’ve made a list of the good comedy videos I’ve found on YouTube.. enjoy.

use opendns to speed up the internets…

Wednesday, July 19th, 2006

A few months ago, a friend of mine that used to work with me at CNET, John Roberts, left to join a startup called OpenDNS. DNS? Really? The last cool DNS project I heard about was EasyDNS (correction.. EveryDNS — thanks Mark!), back when I was frantically trying to find someone to be my authoritative name server. Coincidentally, the EasyDNS dude went on to found OpenDNS.

Anyway, I think get how the Internets kind of works, and while speeding up DNS lookup really would in theory make the general experience better.. But I always assumed that DNS lookups were cached like crazy in just about every spot that used them, so I was frankly a little doubtful as to how noticeable a faster DNS would be..

Well.. I’m now convinced. It’s faster with OpenDNS.

Upon immediate installation of OpenDNS… all of a sudden, everything sped up.. Installation is slighty techy — you have to go and configure the DNS settings in your router.. but they provide easy step-by-step instructions, and after installation, I had to hard reboot my router after a harrowing 10 minutes *GASP* without an internet connection.

I was starting to get accustomed to the laaaaaag of certain sites when you first type them into the browser, but I had always assumed that it was the slowness of web servers that I was accessing.. I guess I was wrong.

Not convinced? If you like charts and numbers, this dude measured the speed difference with OpenDNS and published the results. (ok, no charts, just numbers.)

OpenDNS also claims to help make the Internet safer by blocking out domains to phishing sites and such… but I haven’t seen how that’s going to work just yet… I wonder if another revenue source for them would be to block out adult sites and such (for parents watching over their kids’ surfing and such)..

But for now, I’m using it mainly because it makes my Internets faster (cuz, you know.. the Internet is a series of tubes [thanks Audris!])..

Props to John and the OpenDNS folks..

waiting for y! mail with liam…

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

I’ve been using the Y! Mail beta since like last September now.. it’s super ajax-y, and they’ve done a lot of great stuff with it.. It’s got a 3-pane (msft outlook-ish) reading UI, and sometimes you forget that you’re in a web application. They’ve even put in a right-click menu! The only thing that I really disconcerting is that the “undo” function with ctrl-z doesn’t work, and since I’ve forgotten that I’m in a web application, I try and “undo” things with the ctrl-z.. Not a huge, huge deal, but still something..

bouncing liam

Anyway, Yahoo! has done a fine job with the application, although admittedly, I still somehow prefer the bare-bones utilitarian UI of gmail… and feature-wise, I find the threading view *very* useful (especially since my friends are prone to replying-all). Finally, I find that emails are easier to organize via tags rather than folders.. Ie, many times, an email doesn’t just fit into one folder, and with gmail that’s not a problem.. with Yahoo! (and Outlook, actually), that’s an issue.. you have to pigeonhole.

But, I really like the little bouncy dude that appears when Yahoo! mail is loading slowly.. Granted, performance hasn’t been too much of an issue for me with Yahoo! so it’s been kind of hard to trap Liam, but.. finally I managed to catch him today… And there he is bouncing away on the right.

evolution of dance..

custom chinese propaganda posters…

Tuesday, April 18th, 2006

Oooo.. Vintage Chinese propaganda posters are neat.. But, customized propaganda posters are cooler.. Just send in a picture of yourself, and in two weeks, your very own painted poster (featuring YOU) arrives, having been painted by a REAL Chinese artist!

100 times vigilant

I looked through their poster choices, hoping that one of the default posters would already look like me (cuz, you know, asian people all look same), but.. no, there wasn’t one. Oh well. Guess $200 for a custom painting isn’t too bad, ya?

penelope trunk is blogging…

Sunday, April 16th, 2006

I first found Penelope Trunk’s column, Brazen Careerist back in the dotcom heyday when it was published by Business 2.0– her column focuses mainly on career type issues. Since then it’s moved from B2.0 to Bankrate.com (an odd fit, I thought, but whatever since it kept her writing), and now she sends out her column via email… Hmm.. looks like that Bankrate archive of her column doesn’t work, and I can’t seem to find any good links to her B2.0 stuff… She also writes a bi-weekly column for the Boston Globe called Climb, but honestly, I never really read that one (Why? There’s no RSS feed and I’m too lazy to code one up..) Anyway, I’ve always really liked her smart, straight-forward, no-nonsense style of telling a story, so it’s sad that all of her old work is lost somewhere in the ether..

A while back, in exchanging a few emails with her about one of her columns, I mentioned to her that I really thought that she should blog, and even set up a blog for her on my site so that she could log in and take a look around…

So, I was happy today to get an email from her announcing that she’s finally started blogging, and even gave me a shout out on her first post!

Welcome to the world of blogging, Penelope, I’ve added you to my RSS reader, and I look forward to reading more..

my brother gerard depardieu

Friday, March 17th, 2006

So.. I was reading Valleywag today, and found this link to MyHeritage, where they have some facial recognition software (supposedly to find people who are related to you, I assume).. Anwyay, the demo they have compares your face with their celebrity database, and has provided me with at least 7 minutes of fun this morning. So, I thought I’d share the results with you…

I uploaded a picture of my brother Andy and me…

I asked myHeritage who the Yang brothers look like

Turns out.. we’re none other than Gerard Depardieu and Takeshi Kaneshiro (the dude from House of Flying Daggers)..
Gerard Depardieu & Takeshi Kaneshiro.. Yang Brothers

Woo.. this is fun.. so I dug around, and just for kicks.. I uploaded an old baby picture of mine…

I fed this into the myHeritage Celebrity Match

And… who did I resemble when I was a bouncing, little 1 year old?

myHeritage thinks my baby picture looks like David Hasselhoff

David Hasselhoff.

Uh.. yah. Facial recognition software stuff is cool and all, but I guess this one only has about 3,500 celebrities in it — I would imagine for a better match that you’d need a lot more people in it. That said, I’ve been dying to try out Riya — I’m fairly fanatical about tagging all of my flickr photos, so I’m sure I’d be a great test subject for them… C’mon Riya folk, send me a beta login please.

prada marfa

Tuesday, March 7th, 2006

When I was on one of my roadtrips last year, I fell in love with a little town in West Texas called Marfa. There’s something truly magical about that place, and I wish I would have stayed a bit longer..

prada marfa

Donald Judd put his minimalist art community, Chinati right in Marfa, and now there’s something new.. Prada Marfa. It’s a Prada Store, and it’s never open. The lights are on, but, the store’s never open, and there’s no way in. At night, the store is eerily lit by the normal Prada lime green found in its many boutiques.. It’s kind of a time capsule meets modern day commerce art project or something. And.. it’ll eventually melt into the West Texas landscape with the tumbleweeds.

Dammit, now I have another excuse to go back to Marfa.. Roadtrip anyone?

pi video

Remember when MTV used to play music videos? Man, those days were the best, I especially miss walking up to the TV to change channel with that little slider box thing. Remember that? It was like a little plastic thinger and it would zip to the left and the right so that you could change channels. We didn’t have cable when I was a kid, but I do remember the kids down the street had that thing, and I remember it being da bomb. I mean, music videos on TV, that was a good idea, I don’t know why nobody does that anymore. I mean, even M2 is starting to play shows and stuff now.. grr.

Anyway, check out the Top 50 Music Videos of 2005… but, Willo got it right when she called this video the best one ever.

Good times. Good times.

Contra!!

Tuesday, December 6th, 2005

contra

Ok… this is the coolest thing ever! Contra played right in your web browser… This game was my favoritest game of all time when I was a kid.. My brother and I had the game down to a science. Even the Konami code works (UUDDLRLRBA)… Wow, hearing the theme music just brought memories zooooming back from my childhood.. Hours and hours and hours spent playing Ikari Warriors, where the game could be extended indefinitely by just pushing “ABBA” after you lost all your lives..

Oh, that sound you hear is my daily productivity going right…. down… the.. drain..

monday quick hits..

Monday, November 28th, 2005

I haven’t done a link post in awhile.. it’s monday, and I feel like starting this up again… here we go…

happy monday..

3 dysons

Tuesday, October 4th, 2005

So.. I found this amusing… tomorrow night, there’s a talk being given by three Dysons — Freeman Dyson, Esther Dyson and George Dyson are speaking at an event hosted by the Long Now foundation at Fort Mason (Long Now brings awesome speakers.. the last one was Jared Diamond).. It’s sold out, and should be a fantastic talk, if you can make it… Anyway, there’s a Boing Boing post about it today, but I guess at some point, somehow the picture of the 3 Dyson’s got messed up..

3 dysons

The Boing Boing post is now corrected… but Bloglines feed for Boing Boing currently shows this amusing picture — which is supposedly the three of them.. hee hee.. (caveat, I’m sure that Bloglines will update with the corrected picture anytime now…)

monday brainteaser…

Monday, July 11th, 2005

Petals Around the Rose. A little brainteaser sent to me by Hersh (who’s still working on it)… Amusingly easy if you get it, frustrating if you don’t.

Apparently, this one frustrated Bill Gates back in 1977…
