wooo! i turned 30. the 2nd 24 hours.

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

After that crazy first 30th year day, any normal person would have just stayed in and relaxed the next morning, right? Well, I didn’t really realize that and I had made plans to go for a big bike ride with Dana Saturday morning.. After a few hours of sleep, I met up with Dana at the Presidio and we headed out..

We met up with her friend Matt and decided to ride up the Marin headlands and cross the Golden Gate Bridge. I feel chills as I return to where I’d spent four hours the day before waiting for the AAA tow truck to come and fetch my battered automobile. Needless to say, after my birthday (and since I’d ridden 20 miles the day before on my fixie) I was dead tired. I made it to the top of the headlands, but instead of going down the back to Rodeo beach, I just headed home cuz I was dead tired yo.

To get ready for the next day’s birthday bbq, Steph and I headed over to CostCo, magical land of super fantastic deals on a whole bunch of stuff that you (a) probably don’t really need and (b) you definitely don’t need 250 pounds of even if you really did need it. Standing in line ahead of us was this older couple with the following in their cart:

Three (3) 25 pound boxes of Apples
Two (2) 2 gallon tubs of Mayonnaise
Three (3) 5 pound packs of American Cheese Slices

Stephanie likes to play a game called “What’s their deal?” where you basically people watch, and try and figure out what they’re doing and stuff. I had no idea what these people were doing with that stuff in their cart. Gotta love CostCo.

Anyway… after devouring the $5 CostCo rotisserie chicken that we got for dinner (that thing is DA BOMB).. we headed over to Jablow and James’ house for their old school hip hop party..

Yaaa.. old school hip hop.. I went as one of the kids from Kris Kross, not exactly old school, but it’s old enough (and that makes me feel old, which is fitting on my 30th birthday weekend…). I learned that pants are really designed to be worn forwards. Trying to buckle a belt behind you is damn hard. Dipasquo dressed up as Vanilla Ice, complete with the haircut and everything.. haha.

Yo.

wow. i’m 30. the first 24 hours.

So.. I turned 30 on Friday.. wahoooo!! And what a crazy few days it’s been.. it’s been three days of non-stop fun and excitement…

Thursday night, I met a whole bunch of peoples at The Page for a drink, which has apparently become the neighborhood hangout on Thursday nights… So, since I happened to be there when the clock struck midnight, everyone was nice enough to greet the first minutes of my birthday with a raucous shot.. of something.. I don’t remember what it was that we drank. That said, I didn’t have a crazy night out since the next morning I was waking up at 5am to head up to Infineon Raceway (formerly known as Sears Point) for a track day…

So, I woke up at 5am, as planned and headed towards the Golden Gate Bridge to meet up with Jason, who was also going up to the track, at the first parking lot right across the Golden Gate Bridge. As I’m driving towards the bridge, I notice one of those tall cylindrical cones lying on its side in the MIDDLE of the freeway (Paul later informed me that it’s called a delineator) — there was a car in the lane next to me, so I couldn’t swerve to get out of the way, so… I went over it. *THUNK*

You know all of those lights on your dashboard? The ones that inform you when something’s wrong? Well, they all started coming on. Alternator light. Temperature light. Coolant light. Yah.. shit. Something was bad. Very bad.

my car broke on the way to the track

It was a good thing that I was meeting Jason at the next exit right after the GGB, so I pulled off the exit (only narrowly missing the wall since, as I then found out, my power steering was out too).. We open up the hood and find that, somehow, I hit the cone just right and it managed to knock the serpentine belt off the engine — which powers the alternator, power steering, water pump.. lots of important stuff. Ouch.

So yah, my car was knocked out *before* we even made it up there… how sad is that? (But wait, there’s more) We decided to not let a little setback kill the day, and since Jason had his S2000, we parked my car at the vista point parking lot and continued up to Sears Point.

jason's car caught on fire

The morning was cold, and so was the track, so Jason started driving the laps around Sears Point gingerly. After about five laps, at about turn 4, he started to open it up a bit more.. and then… I look behind my shoulder (it’s a convertible) and see black smoke, and a huge FIREBALL. One of the spotter dudes that watches the track from up atop a tower shouts out “Fire! Fire!” so we pull over to the side and open up the hood, finding that the entire engine bay has caught fire. Do we have a fire extinguisher? No. Uh oh. The entire track is under yellow flag, so a few cars drive slowly by us, kind of looking at us with an “oh shit” look on their faces. It seemed like an eternity, but it must have only been a minute or two, but the fire trucks came by and finally put the fire out. Oops.

An oil gauge that Jason had installed to monitor the s2000’s oil pressure had most likely sprung a small leak, causing oil to be sprayed all over the engine bay. Once oil gets hot enough, apparently it catches fire. Crazy. Two cars out of commission, and I didn’t even get to drive (although, lucky for me, I’m getting a credit for the event, and I get to go back in July.. whoohoo!) Good thing I brought my camera.. since otherwise, I’d have nothing else to do up at the track besides watch everyone else drive around the track. So, I did get some good pictures.

IMG_1419 IMG_1441 IMG_1462 IMG_1451 IMG_1454

We had to call AAA that day. Twice. On the way back from Sears Point, I had Jason’s tow truck drop me off at my car, where I waited for my tow truck. Woohoo.

Since I had some extra time now, since I was home early from the track, I went on a little bike ride with Jason (who was also home and not wanting to be sitting at home looking at his burnt car), we went on a nice bike ride around the city.. It was a gorgeous day, and I didn’t want to waste it. I met Mom, Dad, Andy, Meredith and Stephanie for dinner in South City (bacon-wrapped anything is good in my book) and then headed back to my parents’ house for cake. For my birthday, my parents got me the Digital Rebel that I’ve been taking pictures with for the past month — thanks mom and dad! Stephanie made me some awesome books by printing out the past two years of dennisyang.com — it was actually really cool to see all of this stuff that I’ve written in printed form.. What a great gift! Meredith got me an awesome book of the Golden Gate Bridge, which is completely ironic considering I spent like 3 hours sitting at the vista point waiting for the tow truck. And, Andy got me a new tennis racquet, since I’ve re-found the whole tennis thing lately. We broke out the ol’ VHS tapes and watched some home movies and I headed for a drink at Jade for the last few minutes of my birthday..

Whooo.. tired. So, to re-cap, the first 24 hours of my 30s wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, but.. exciting nonetheless..

happy new year from nyc!

Thursday, January 5th, 2006

Though the week has been peppered with nasty not-so-nice weather, New York has delivered a fantastic experience in every other aspect of the trip.. Actually, the occasional bouts of freezing rain have kept the whole city blanketed in that damp movie set like quality, so maybe that’s a good thing.. So it was quite the accidental reunion here in New York for a whole bunch of my friends — somehow, like 20 of my friends from San Francisco ended up here for the new year.. good times..

lots of san franciscans in the LESjulia, sailija and junieIMG_5615

So, for new years, I first headed over to Kevin’s for a little party with Eric and his friends.. They made a bunch of tasty food, but I had to leave before they got the the fondue… Damn, missed to boiling cheese-fest. Like I mentioned before, a bunch of us headed down to the Falls in Soho for the evening, so I had to join up with them (especially since I paid the $90 for the open bar, and I had to get my money’s worth).. The Falls was packed by the time I got there. Although from what I hear, it was packed at 8:55 since the open bar started at 9pm, I guess everyone wanted to get as much drinking in as possible.

IMG_5682IMG_5693IMG_5691

As for shenanigans… as any evening with an open bar promises, there were plenty… Granted, Andy and Meredith left at about 11:50pm and celebrated the New Year on the PATH, but as for the rest of us, I’m pretty sure we got our fill of the open bar.. So yah.. there were a lot of shenanigans that I won’t get into, but at least one has made it onto the glorious Internet. And the others are probably best left in our collective foggy memories happily ringing in the new year…

ztrip

Tonight is Future Primitive Soundsystem’s TEN YEAR anniversary concert at Mighty. It’s gonna be awesome. One of my favorite DJs, Z-Trip will be spinning, and he’s teaming up with Radar, who recently put out a really cool experimental cd, Concerto for Turntable.. Doze Green will be doing a live painting, Faust and Shortee will be spinning too..

Shows this cool don’t come around that often, so you should go for sure.

Woot.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

We had a bunch of people over the Yang family house for a good ol’ fashioned Thanksgiving day dinner with three turkeys and all of the fixin’s.. The initial plan was to do three different styles of turkey: deep fried, bbq’d, and rotisserie’d (on the Showtime rotisserie grill)…

jason checks on the bbq

The bbq was the first to get going — Jason works for Kingsford and brought a brand new weber, along with the latest in Kingsford charcoal technology.. The process is pretty neat; once you get the coals going, you push the coals to the side, and put a tray of water in the middle, underneath the bird. Then, with the lid on (and the mesquite chips added) the bbq turns into a smokey furnace for the next 5 hours… Mmmm..

the turkey still doesn't really fit in the showtime

The rotisserie turkey was the next on the list, but unfortunately, had to duck out of the race early on account of the fact that the turkey didn’t FIT inside the rotisserie. Ooops. Even after we attempted to hack off its wings, it still didn’t fit. Poor turkey. So, in the end, turkey #2 was roasted in the oven for awhile, and then finished up on the grill.. Kind of a hybrid turkey.. Andy also glazed it in some honey sauce of some sort, but it was really out of the race anyway…

andy lowers the turkey into the fryer

The deep fried turkey was the main event… After seeing all of the news this week about the dangers of turkey fryers, we took extra precautions so that my parents didn’t return from their vacation (they’re in Japan for the week) to a burnt down house.. We thought having three fire extinguishers around was enough.. The turkey cooks in the oil at 350 degrees farenheight, so we all took turns watching the thermometer whilst the cooking oil was brought up making sure that it didn’t get about 450 (the temperature at which oil spontaneously combusts).. It was taking a long while for the oil to heat up.. maybe a little *too* long.. until, we noticed that we were reading celsius. Oh geez. well, thankfully we noticed long before there was any real danger..

three turkeys!

The bbq turkey took about 5 hours to cook, the fried turkey.. 1 hour… and in the end, both were super tasty. The bbq had an awesome smokey mesquite taste to it, so I think that it was the winner.. You’d think that the bbq would dry out the turkey and stuff, but honestly, that turkey came out perfectly.

It’s two days after Thanksgiving now, and I’m still stuffed.. In addition to the three turkeys, we had a veritable cornucopia of food comprising of bacon wrapped dates, bacon wrapped scallops, tasty corn soup, some sort of fried meatballs brought by the designers, mashed potatoes of two varieties, sweet potatoes, three different green bean casseroles, homemade cranberry sauce, gravy, homemade stuffing, and at least seven different pies (pumpkin, pecan, sweet potato, mince, peach and apple).. and.. deep fried twinkies.

Yah, we have a few leftovers.

kato komparison

Yes, yes, Halloween night isn’t even until tonight, but since it’s a Monday and all, most festivities took place Saturday — sure, there’s still going to be the huge street party at the Castro tonight, but I’ll most likely skip it since it’s not all that..

This year I dressed up as Kato, Bruce Lee’s character from the Green Hornet.. I originally wanted to be a superhero called “Doorman” (get it? Doooooooormaaan! He’s a super hero! Armed with a velvet rope and all…) I visited the doorman supply store in New York City and found the perfect doorman uniform.. well, almost perfect.. the main problem was that it would cost me like $800 to get it.. Ouch. So, plan B was to make a doorman costume, and after making the costume, I looked in the mirror and realized that I started to look alot more like Kato, than a Doorman… so, Kato it is.. Maybe I’ll start on my doorman costume for next year, complete with half cape and all.

jack soundchecks

Anyway, the 2nd annual holla’ ween party went really, really well.. We decorated the social club liberally with cobwebs, spooky wall hangings and mummy wrappings, so the place looked great. I played the early set in the back room, and I was a bit rusty considering that I haven’t really spun out since.. last November — man, how quickly a year passes. I accidentally opened the set with a drum n’ bass record, but I was able to get out of it gracefully, and frankly when I began only Mel and Loan were there anyway, so they probably wouldn’t have minded if I messed up.. After a few records, everything started to feel familiar again, and my set actually went quite well — it’s so fun to play on a huge, loud sound system… By the end of my set, the room was filled with happy halloweeners. I recorded my set, so I’ll master it and post it here soon..

susankenny and angiealan, doug and kane.. and a sheepjoann and justine

The party was super fun, and well attended.. Just about everyone who came was in costume even; San Francisco sure does love Halloween.. We had to shut down the door at around 1am, since it was getting way too crowded inside, and then we had our own little bit of mayhem.. But, all in a nights work of running a big party, I suppose.

duff men!robin and dan..pam, sally and stephanieshingo!!

Anyway, the pictures are here, take a look.. and send me links to any of your pictures, and I’ll add links to them here..

It’s nearing Halloween here in San Francisco… and once again, I’m throwing a Halloween party… Last year’s party at the Tenderloft was a huge success and this year we’re throwing it at Kane’s new bar, the Social Club at 1751 Fulton.. I haven’t spun out since last year’s party. I can’t believe it’s been that long.. how quickly a year passes, yah?

So.. come on out this Saturday (in costume, of course).. see you then!!

yet another crazy weekend… z-trip, sigur ros and m83

Sunday, October 2nd, 2005

It’s been a crazy month.. The Indians made a valiant effort for a playoff berth, but alas, getting swept by the White Sox in the last pivotal games of the season didn’t help out the situation at all. Ack.. it’s so sad to see them miss the playoffs, they had a fantastic amount of momentum these past few weeks, that fizzled just shy of the wild card spot. Grr.

m83 @ mezzanine

Anyway, the torrent of amazing live shows continues this week… M83 played at Mezzanine on Thursday.. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from a live show. After seeing Royksopp fiddling with computers for an entire gig, I was pleasantly suprised to see that M83 actually plays live instruments.. The show was barely attended, I guess the promoters didn’t really get the word out enough.. That said, it was really cool to see M83 with a small, mellow crowd, since their music isn’t really that dancey anyway..

sigur ros @ the paramount theater

Saturday started off with Sigur Ros in Oakland.. Again, I had no idea what to expect, since Sigur Ros is really electronic-y sounding and a bit eccentric (they made up their own language for a lot of their songs.. and the other ones are in Icelandic, which sounds made up anyway). Sigur Ros was the first “rock” show that I’ve been to where everyone sat quietly in their seats. Kottke had a similar experience, but yah — they did a song where there was 30 seconds of silence in the middle, and it was dead quiet.. It was an amazing show, although admittedly I was quite relaxed, and I’m not sure at what degree of consciousness I was in throughout the show (ie.. I think I might have dozed off). But, as Andy rightly explained, Sigur Ros has some wonderfully relaxing tunes, which are quite appropriate as falling asleep music, so… if you’re conditioned to hear Sigur Ros before you fall alseep….. Pavolvian instincts kick in. But, yah.. Sigur Ros is awesome — I just got their new Album, Takk, and it’s solid..

z-trip and goldenchyld at mezzanine

After Sigur Ros, we hightailed it back across the bridge to Mezzanine for the Z-Trip show.. Z-Trip is on the complete opposite end of the energy spectrum of Sigur Ros.. He was just here back in August, but the last show was at the Regency, which is a cavernous ballroom.. Mezzanine is a smaller club, so the overall vibe was much better than the last show. We got there early enough to see Goldenchyld, Dj Zeph open, and they both rocked as well. Z-Trip is soooo good, I can’t recommend him enough — his show at DNA lounge two years ago, and last night’s show rank as two of the best shows that I have ever been to ever… He’s definitely one of the most talented turntablists out there, and to this tour, he’s added dvd decks and live drumming to his set. If anyone has a live recording of last night’s show.. please let me know… And, if you want to check out some of Z-Trip’s stuff, download them here (this link is from Z-Trip’s site, so it’s cool.. he encourages the sharing of his music.. which is quite enlightened of him, imho).

This week brings the American Express Golf Championships to Harding Park — I’ve got tickets all week, so I’m looking forward to seeing Tiger and Phil tear up the local course..

exhausting fun weekend…

loveparade in the shadow of city hallloveparade here we go

Ahh.. I do love living in San Francisco.. It’s been a fun filled few weeks.. Royksopp last week, Her Space Holiday and Stellastarr* this week (and all of those shows were during the week!).

Then, came the weekend.. Every year, the last weekend of September brings gorgeous summer-like weather and a fun-filled weekend of nonstop parties with the arrival of Love Parade and the Folsom Street Fair. It’s the second year of Love Parade in San Francisco, and this year’s route took the party right down Market street, ending up at the Civic Center (conveniently three blocks from my house). Hmm.. I find it a little odd that news.com covered it, but hey, that’s cool, I guess.

crystal method!we're all fans of celesta

Anyway, it was awesome to be at a party in the middle of the day in the shadow of City Hall. Supperclub had a magnificent float decorated much like the Salle Neige, in all white, with two big beds on either end.. The Space Cowboys brought the Unimog as usual, and the good folks at Massive Selector put together a kickass float with Club Six. I spent most of the time with the Cowboys, who were playing sweet, funky breaks.. Crystal Method played on the supperclub float, which was incredible, so I was glad I got to see them..

Whoooo.. This week brings M83 at Mezzanine on Thursday and then Sigur Ros on Saturday in Oakland.. and then Z-Trip later that night at Mezzanine.. need.. more.. red bull… AND the new season of LOST has started.. so much to do!

All of my pics from loveparade are here.

royksopp!

royksopp @ mezzanine

Royksopp came into town last night, and played a show at Mezzanine.. Mezzanine was a fantastic venue for the show — I’ve only seen dj’s there, and the place sets up quite nicely for live acts.. The sound system was fantastic, so the rumbling bass that accompanies most Royksopp tracks was dutifully served — for most of the songs, I could feel my insides reverberating to the beat.. crazy. Annie opened for Royksopp — though she has a few great songs, the crowd didn’t really seem that into her, and for some reason, her sound was much more treble-y, and didn’t seem to work with the system there..

Mezannine has a few great shows lined up for the next few weeks — M83 on September 29th, then Z-TRIP is coming back to SF on October 1st.. .Z-TRIP’s last show was rockin, despite being at a crappy venue (the Regency).. I’m also seeing Sigur Ros on the 1st in Oakland, so that should be quite the busy night… The reviews of the Sigur Ros shows have been phenomenal, so I’m quite looking forward to that…

So much music.. so little time..

supperclub… now open..

crowded house

This weekend, Supperclub San Francisco held its grand opening gala.. I’m just one of the investors, so I really don’t have *that* much to do with the actual place, so I can’t really take much credit for it. Anyway, it’s amazing. The place is gorgeous, with three rooms: a red bar “Le Bar Rouge”, a mirrored-colour changing lounge “La Salle PrivĂ©e”, and the main balconied dining room “La Salle Neige” — all white, beds all around the sides.. Supperclub is already a legendary establishment in Amsterdam and Rome, and San Francisco is their first US venture.

then blue again

The gala opening was spectacular. Themed “wild, silver and white”, I got decked out in an all white tuxedo for the event. Costumes ranged from hot silver dresses to tennis outfits (get it? white!) to one guy who pasted mirror tile all over himself (he would be been quite at home in the limo). The evening was punctuated a sampling of the various performances that will be happening throughout the course of a normal Supperclub meal — djs, drummers, opera singers, drag queens, and even a chocolate orgy.. So, if you’re around San Francisco, be sure to set aside an evening for a visit…

busy labor day weekend…

Thursday, September 8th, 2005

It was quite the busy busy labor day weekend.. This was my first labor day weekend in five years that I actually spent here in san francisco, since I usually am at burningman… This year, I held on to my ticket until the very last minute to keep alive the possibility that I might actually make it up there again, but it never happened. This year was the 20th anniversary of the event, and it sure did look like fun. Oh well.. Less than a year till the next burningman, I suppose..

amy & joe

The weekend was kicked off with a bang, with the wedding of my friends, Amy and Joe.. Their wedding was in Sausalito, and went off without a hitch. The ceremony was in this awesome little church atop a hill, followed by the wedding reception just across the street.. It’s been quite the wedding season this year already, this being my third, after Steve & Monnia’s and Jason & Bonnie’s… The reception was at the Alta Mira, which usually has a spectacular view of San Francisco (which was smothered in fog the whole day). Congrats Amy & Joe! (Oh yah, congrats to Steve & Monnia and Jason & Bonnie too.. albeit belated on the blog.. oops).

we drank 169 beers

Sunday was marked by Paul M’s first evite’d event (welcome to the internets, Paul) — a bbq at the famed 629 Elizabeth house. We were graced by Korby’s return to SF for the weekend (it really seems like he didn’t move to NYC).. True to a San Francisco September day, the weather was actually quite warm, though a cold, foggy breeze rolled in midway through to remind us to not leave our jackets out of arm’s reach. As would be expected with any gathering of the jerks, there was an excessive amount of sausage present (both literally and figuratively), an ton of yelling, and copius quantities of beer consumed. Approximately 169 cans and bottles, to be exact. Paul had initially forecast beer consumption at around 80 beers, and clearly he underestimated the amount of beer consumed during several rounds of raucous asshole.

oysters at tomales bay

We groggily awoke Monday and headed for Tomales Bay, for oysters straight from the farm.. Ahh.. more bbq’ing and beer. We were quite weary from the previous night’s outing, so the beer drinking was actually kept to a minimum. The oyster eating was quite sweeeeet.. I highly recommend it — I mean, for like 8 bucks, you get a dozen oysters in a mesh bag that have just been freshly plucked right out of the bay in front of you.. delicious tasty goodness.

Yes, living in San Francisco is good.

happy birthday to the jerks

Wednesday, August 10th, 2005

birthday baboons.. er balloons.

Happy birthday to Pius, Jablow.. and (as we discovered today) Kai.. All three of these jerks were born on the same day (well, Jablow was born a year later, but at Pius and Kai were popped out on the same exact date). A bunch of us are headed to Las Vegas this weekend to continue the tradition of the 30th birthday party trip.. This year has been quite busy already with Jo’s Miami trip and Korby’s Vancouver trip… Tonight we all went down to Todai for some birthday all-you-can-eat goodness. Todai is a scary, scary place. Sushi quality is what you would expect from an all-you-can-eat place, but it’s actually pretty good.. Cost-wise, it’s not really any cheaper, since you end up paying about the same (or more, actually) than you would usually pay for a regular sushi dinner. If only we had stomachs that could hold enough food to last us for days — then the all-you-can-eat business model would really start to come into question…

Hmm.. that would be neat, actually, if you only had to eat like once a week? You could have one really HUGE meal that took like a few hours… That would change the whole restaurant business completely.. Would people only eat on certain days? If you asked a cute girl to dinner, and she was a “Tuesday” and you were a “Saturday” — how would that work? I guess you could starve yourself (or eat snacks) and then eat on a Tuesday, but then your whole schedule would be messed up.. just for that girl.. and stuff. Well, maybe it’s ok if she were really cute.

techdirt 25k party

mike masnick

Last night was the Techdirt 25k party at the cigar bar.. in celebration of Techdirt’s 25,000th post.. Me and the many Mikes of Techdirt headed down and enjoyed a drink and a cigar down in downtown SF. Despite the nasty San Francisco drizzle/rain, and despite the premiere of episode III, we had a good turnout, and a good time seemed to be had by all..

Back in the heyday, there was some sort of happy hour or party like every night… since 2005 is the new 1999 and all, who’s gonna bring back the happy hours?

I’ve posted photos at flickr, tagged “techdirt25k“…

painted ladies at bay to breakers

This weekend was Bay to Breakers… and what a glorious weekend it was.. Unlike past years, I chose not to start at the start. Since I live only a few blocks from the course, instead of waking up ass early at 7am and heading downtown, I chose to sleep in a bit and join up with the race at Hayes and Gough. So.. all in all, it took me about 6 hours to complete about 1/2 of the course.. that’s about.. um.. 3 miles in 6 hours.. not bad, yah?

Well.. I woke up before 8am anyway, and since I was up already, I decided that I’d try and get down to the course to see the “elite” runners run by.. I got to the course at about 8:10am, and by then, they were already long gone, having completed the entire 7.5 mile run in like 34 minutes or something. Oh well. I did get to see quite a few people run by… I never realized just how many people 70,000 are, but I guess in years past since you’re moving with the crowd, you don’t realize how many people that is..

As we passed one of the icky green ponds in the park, Jablow and Rob were convinced that they were going to take a little swim. Connie tackled Jablow while he was untying his shoe, which made him land headfirst into the pavement. Ow. His head made a nice thud, and Connie’s goal of getting Jablow to NOT swim was a success. Rob, on the other hand, snuck over to the other side of the lake, and dove right in, headfirst. Unfortunately, the pond was like 1 foot deep. OUCH.

So.. yah.. it was a good day despite the 2 head wounds (they’re ok).

snoop dogg plays slope day

Thursday, May 12th, 2005

Man.. this year sure is flyin’ by quickly…

Last Friday was slope day at my alma mater, Cornell… Slope day is the huge party on the very last day of classes at Cornell. All of the students gather on libe slope and basically sit there and drink all day. In all of my years there it was a tolerated un-official event..

slope day

This year, they got Snoop Dogg. yah.. apparently now, slope day is all official and stuff, the whole slope is fenced off, and you need a ticket.. back in my day, you just showed up at the slope with your.. er.. water bottle.. and just sat there and contemplated the last day of classes.. while.. drinking from your water bottle. wheee.

snoop slope day

Fo shizzle big red dizzle.

at a bar in vancouver

It’s been an ongoing tradition to plan a trip whenever one of my friend’s turns 30, so this weekend was Korby’s birthday party in Vancouver… We all flew up to Seattle (since it was cheaper) and then drove up to Canada in a rented van. Kim made us all wear matching shirts.

Man, Vancouver is lovely. Clean city, cute girls, and cheap living — what more could you want? We saw a few places for sale in downtown Vancouver for like $250,000 CDN.. I think you can maybe buy a shoebox here in San Francisco for that. Crazy.

welcome to the united states!

At the US-Canada border, Tom Kim chats with the border patrol:

“Hello.”
“Hello.”

“What was your purpose of your visit to Canada?”
“Uhhh… ummm.. Just looking around.”

“Hmm. So, what was your purpose?”
“Ummmm.. yah.. just looking around, you know.”

“Did you purchase anything in Canada?”
“Ummmm.. not really.”

“How do you know all of these people?”
“Ummm.. I don’t know.. I guess.. Ummm.. I used to work with him, I think.. and uhhh… I think they all went to college together”

“Please turn off your engine and open the door.”

Geez.. I mean, honestly… Tom Kim is the most suspicious innocent person I’ve ever met… “Not REALLY“?!?! Just looking around“?!?!? Haha.. man, maybe you “had to be there” but it was damn funny. Well, it was damn funny because we didn’t get cavity searched. That wouldn’t have been funny. Ok, maybe a little.

Anyway.. happy birthday Korby!

halloween!

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2004

So… the halloween party was a success… We had over 500 people show up to our party, and a wonderful time was had by all. We had a few scares where we thought the police were gonna come and shut down the party, but it was all good. I guess being in the tenderloin and all, the police had more important things to attend to than to stop a fun little halloween shindig..

My pictures aren’t up yet (as to be expected — i’m a slacker), but do check out the plethora of pics that my friends have put up…
